MacBook liquid damage – save it after spilled coffee, water or juice

Last updated:

Quick answer

If you've spilled liquid on your MacBook: power it OFF immediately (hold the power button for 10 seconds), unplug the charger, open the lid wide and rest it upside-down on a towel. Don't turn it back on until it has been opened up and cleaned. Every hour counts — call us right away for an emergency rescue.

The first 5 minutes are critical

When liquid is spilled on a MacBook, it isn’t the liquid itself that destroys it — it’s the short circuits that occur when current flows through wet electronics. So: power it off, and don’t turn it back on until it has been opened and cleaned.

The wrong things to do:

  • Checking whether it still works (you’re creating short circuits)
  • Putting it in rice (does nothing about the liquid inside)
  • Using a hairdryer (pushes liquid deeper in)
  • Waiting “a few days to see”
  • Leaving the charger plugged in

The right things to do:

  • Power it off immediately (10 seconds on the power button)
  • Unplug the charger
  • Open the lid wide and rest the MacBook upside-down on a towel
  • Call a specialist — within hours, not days

What happens if you wait?

Even with apparently harmless spills (a little water on the keyboard), this is what happens inside the MacBook:

0–24 hours: the liquid wicks into flex cables and under components by capillary action. 24–72 hours: corrosion starts forming green or whitish deposits on the solder joints. 1–2 weeks: the corrosion “eats” the traces on the logic board, and specific circuits start failing. 1–6 months: components die one by one. Eventually the logic board is no longer economically repairable.

That’s why a quick ultrasonic cleaning is far cheaper than waiting.

What does liquid damage repair cost?

Between DKK 1,500 and DKK 6,000 depending on the extent of the damage:

  • Preventive cleaning (MacBook still works): DKK 1,500-2,000
  • Ultrasonic cleaning + diagnosis after a spill: DKK 2,000-2,500
  • Micro-soldering of individual corroded components: plus DKK 1,000-2,500
  • Component-level logic board repair (extensive corrosion): DKK 4,000-6,000
  • Keyboard / top case replacement (if the keyboard is destroyed): plus DKK 2,000-3,500

With us you get a free diagnosis and a fixed quote before the repair starts. If the MacBook can’t be rescued, we agree the terms with you before we start.

Where can I get it repaired?

We specialise in liquid damage. We have ultrasonic baths, microscopes and component-level soldering stations — all the equipment that Apple and general PC workshops don’t have. We rescue MacBooks across Denmark, including by post.

If you’re sending it in, pack the MacBook properly (not in rice) for transport.

First aid: what to do right now

⏱ PT5M

  1. Power it off immediately. Hold the power button for 10 seconds until the MacBook shuts down. Do NOT wait for a normal shutdown.
  2. Unplug the charger. Disconnect the MagSafe or USB-C charger to remove power completely.
  3. Rest the MacBook upside-down. Open the lid wide and rest the MacBook upside-down on a dry towel — keyboard facing down. That way liquid runs OUT instead of further into the components.
  4. Don't turn it back on. Even if you think it's dry: ELECTRONICS + LIQUID + POWER = a short circuit. Wait.
  5. Call us. Get in touch with us straight away on the phone for an emergency slot. Time is critical — especially with sugary drinks.
  6. Drop off or send in. Bring the MacBook to us, or post it (don't power it on).

Frequently asked questions

My MacBook got wet — what do I do right now?
1) Power it OFF immediately — hold the power button for 10 seconds. 2) Unplug the charger. 3) Open the lid wide and rest the MacBook upside-down on a towel — keyboard facing down, so liquid runs OUT instead of down into the logic board. 4) The rice trick doesn't work — it just delays the repair. 5) Call us right away. Time is critical.
Can a MacBook survive liquid damage?
Yes, if it's treated within 24–48 hours. We open the MacBook, clean the logic board ultrasonically in isopropyl alcohol, and replace any corroded components. The success rate is high for water and coffee, lower for sugary drinks, and dramatically lower for salt water.
What does it cost to rescue a MacBook with liquid damage?
Between DKK 1,500 and DKK 6,000 depending on the extent of the damage — DKK 1,500-2,000 for preventive cleaning (the Mac still works), DKK 2,000-2,500 for ultrasonic cleaning + diagnosis after a spill, plus DKK 1,000-2,500 if corroded components need micro-soldering, and DKK 4,000-6,000 for full component-level logic board repair. Keyboard/top case replacement if destroyed: plus DKK 2,000-3,500. See the current price per scenario at macmo.dk/reparation. Diagnosis is free and no-obligation — if we can't rescue the MacBook, we agree the terms with you before we start.
Should I put my MacBook in rice?
No. The rice trick is a myth. It doesn't remove the liquid inside the MacBook — it just gives corrosion time to take hold on the logic board. Send it to us as quickly as possible.
My MacBook actually still works after the spill — should I still have it opened?
Yes, absolutely. Even if the MacBook seems fine, the liquid is still inside and will cause corrosion on the logic board over weeks or months, ending in a much more expensive fault. We offer a 'preventive cleaning' that's significantly cheaper than a logic board repair down the line.
