MacBook won't start – logic board, kernel panic and no chime

Last updated:

Quick answer

When a MacBook won't start, the fault is typically on the logic board, in the power supply, or in the SSD controller. Before you give up: try an SMC reset, an NVRAM reset, and a known-good charger. If none of that works, logic board repair is often possible at our workshop — and dramatically cheaper than buying new.

My MacBook won’t turn on at all — what now?

Before you panic and order a new one: 9 out of 10 MacBooks that “won’t turn on” actually have a simple explanation. Work through it systematically.

Step 1: Power. Check that the charger is lit (LED on MagSafe or status on the USB-C connector). Try a KNOWN-good charger from another Mac. Check the wall socket.

Step 2: Hold the power button. Hold it for 10 seconds to force a hard shutdown. Wait 10 seconds. Then press the power button normally.

Step 3: SMC reset (Intel Macs). On laptops with a non-removable battery: hold Shift+Ctrl+Option (left side) + the power button for 10 seconds. Release everything. Press the power button normally.

Step 4: NVRAM reset. Press the power button and immediately hold Cmd+Option+P+R for 20 seconds. Release.

Step 5: Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4). SMC and NVRAM resets no longer exist. Hold the power button for 10 seconds for a hard restart. Then hold the power button for 5 seconds to open startup options.

What can be repaired on a logic board?

A lot of people assume that a faulty logic board means “buy a new MacBook”. That’s outdated thinking. At the component level we repair:

  • Power-management ICs (SMC, PMIC) – replaced by micro-soldering
  • USB-C / Thunderbolt controllers
  • Display flex controllers
  • GPU IC (replacement — we don’t do temporary reflows)
  • SSD controllers (on models where it’s possible)
  • Corrosion from liquid damage (cleaning + component replacement)

Where can I get it repaired?

We have microscopes, IR soldering stations and BGA tooling for component-level repair. Very few Danish workshops do this on MacBooks — general PC workshops will almost always either pass you on or swap the whole board.

With us you get:

  • Free diagnosis and a no-obligation quote
  • A fixed price before repair — no hidden fees
  • 2 years’ warranty on both parts and labour

How to test for a logic board fault yourself

⏱ PT5M

  1. Plug in a KNOWN-good charger for 15 minutes. Leave the MacBook plugged in for at least 15 minutes without pressing anything. A completely flat battery can take time to wake. Check that the charger is showing power (LED on MagSafe, or status on USB-C). If there's no light: try a new charger/cable.
  2. Hold the power button for 10 seconds. Long-press the power button for exactly 10 seconds to force a hard shutdown. Release. Wait 10 seconds. Press the power button normally. This clears firmware hangs.
  3. SMC reset (Intel Macs). On an Intel MacBook with a non-removable battery: hold Shift+Ctrl+Option (left side) + the power button for 10 seconds. Release everything. Press the power button normally. This resets power, battery and fan management.
  4. NVRAM reset. Press the power button and immediately hold Cmd+Option+P+R for 20 seconds (Intel). Resets display, sound and startup settings. Doesn't exist on Apple Silicon.
  5. Test with an external display. Connect an external display via USB-C. If you can hear the Mac start (fans, chime) but the screen is black, and the external display works, the fault could be in the panel, flex cable OR the internal display path on the logic board (all three are repairable at our workshop). If the external display also doesn't work, it's definitely the logic board.
  6. Book a diagnosis if nothing helps. We have microscopes, IR soldering stations and BGA tooling for component-level diagnosis. We find the specific faulty IC and replace it — typically DKK 1,800-4,800 versus DKK 6,000-15,000 at Apple. Diagnosis is free.

Frequently asked questions

My MacBook won't turn on — what do I check first?
1) Use a KNOWN-good charger and leave it plugged in for 15 minutes. 2) Hold the power button for 10 seconds for a hard restart. 3) On Intel: SMC reset (Shift+Ctrl+Option+Power for 10 seconds). 4) NVRAM reset (Cmd+Option+P+R for 20 seconds at boot). If nothing helps, it's hardware — get in touch with us.
What is a kernel panic?
Kernel panic is macOS's version of the 'blue screen of death' — the system has hit an error it can't recover from. The 'Your computer restarted because of a problem' message after boot. Causes: faulty RAM, a corrupt drive, faulty peripherals (external disks), or a hardware fault on the logic board. We diagnose this in 30-60 minutes.
What does logic board repair cost?
Between DKK 1,800 and DKK 4,800 depending on the fault — DKK 1,800-3,500 for micro-soldering a single IC (PMIC, SMC, USB-C controller), DKK 2,000-3,500 for a GPU replacement, up to DKK 4,000-4,800 for full component-level repair on extensive corrosion. Apple always replaces the entire board for DKK 6,000-15,000, so we're often 50-70% cheaper because we only replace what's actually faulty. See current pricing per fault at macmo.dk/reparation.
My MacBook shows a purple or green screen — what is that?
A distorted image with purple, green or pixel mess at boot is typically a faulty GPU or faulty GPU solder joints. The classic 'radeongate' on the 15'' MacBook Pro 2011, but it can also occur on newer models after overheating. We can replace the GPU IC. (We don't offer reflow — it's a temporary fix that typically fails again within months.)
Question mark folder at boot — what does it mean?
The MacBook can't find a startup drive. Either the SSD is disconnected/dead, or there's a firmware problem. On models where the SSD is soldered down (M1/M2/M3 and 2018+ Pro), this is a logic board repair. On older models with a socketed SSD, it can be replaced on its own.
Is my MacBook repairable, or should I buy a new one?
In 80% of cases, repair is cheaper than new. Logic board repair with us is typically DKK 1,800-4,800, versus DKK 12,000-25,000 for a new MacBook. We provide free diagnosis and a fixed quote. See current pricing per fault at macmo.dk/reparation. Make the decision with facts in hand, not assumptions.
