iMac 21.5'' Intel (2012–2017) – known issues and repair

Last updated:

Quick answer

The iMac 21.5'' Intel (2012–2017) is compact, but harder to repair than the 27'' model because of its denser internal layout. Fusion Drive and PSU are the most frequent fault points. RAM is soldered on most 21.5'' models (unlike the 27''). We repair every iMac 21.5'' Intel.

About the iMac 21.5” Intel (2012–2017)

The compact version of the classic iMac. Well suited to desks with limited space, but technically harder to repair than the 27” model because of the tighter internal layout.

Specifications (2017 model):

  • Chip: Intel Core i5/i7 (7th generation)
  • RAM: 8–32 GB DDR4 (soldered on most models)
  • SSD/HDD: 1 TB Fusion or 256–512 GB SSD
  • Display: 21.5” 4K Retina (4096×2304) or 1080p on base models

Known issues

Fusion Drive clicks itself to death. Classic: the HDD part of the Fusion Drive (1 or 2 TB) fails after 6–8 years of use. Symptoms: clicking sounds, slow startup, “spinning beach ball” on everything. Solution: swap to a pure SSD.

Soldered RAM (most models). You cannot upgrade RAM on the 21.5” from 2013 onwards. Buy a model with 16 GB+ if you plan to use it long-term.

Limited cooling. The 21.5” has a smaller cooling system than the 27”, and dust accumulates faster. Recommendation: cleaning + thermal paste every 3–4 years.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upgrade RAM on the iMac 21.5'' Intel?
Only on the 2012 model (4 GB → 16 GB). The 2013–2017 21.5'' models have soldered RAM. If you need more RAM, an SSD upgrade is a better alternative — same effect on perceived speed.
What does a Fusion Drive → SSD upgrade cost?
DKK 2,500–3,500 including a 1 TB SSD and labour (2 TB adds DKK 800–1,500). A bit pricier on the 21.5'' than the 27'' because disassembly is harder — but it's the single best upgrade you can make. See current pricing at macmo.dk/reparation.
Is a 2014 iMac 21.5'' still worth repairing?
If the base price is right (under DKK 2,500 used) and an SSD upgrade can be done economically, you often end up with a smooth daily computer for very little money. For light use (web, office, video streaming) it's often good value. But macOS no longer supports 2017 and older from Sequoia onwards. See current repair pricing at macmo.dk/reparation.
