MacBook Air M1 (2020) – known issues, longevity and repair
Last updated:
Quick answer
The MacBook Air M1 (2020) is one of the most durable MacBooks Apple has ever built — a fanless design with no moving parts. The main issues are battery degradation after 4–5 years, USB-C port wear and the occasional flexgate-like display fault. Soldered SSD and RAM mean repairs require specialist equipment, which we have.
About the MacBook Air M1 (2020)
The MacBook Air M1 was Apple’s first computer with Apple Silicon, launched in November 2020. It introduced the fanless architecture and shocked the industry with performance on par with the Intel MacBook Pro 13” — without a fan, and with 15+ hours of battery life.
Specifications:
- Chip: Apple M1 (8-core CPU, 7- or 8-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine)
- RAM: 8 or 16 GB unified memory (soldered)
- SSD: 256 GB – 2 TB (soldered)
- Display: 13.3” Retina, 2560×1600
- Ports: 2× Thunderbolt/USB 4 + 3.5 mm jack
- Battery: up to 18 hours of playback
Known issues and what to watch for
Battery degradation. As with all lithium-ion: after 4–5 years capacity has dropped 20–40%. Not a fault, but something that needs to be repaired at some point. See our battery guide.
USB-C port wear. The M1 Air has only 2 USB-C ports, and if you use the same port for both charging and peripherals it wears out faster. If the connector feels loose or falls out, get in touch with us.
Screen pressure cracks. The thin aluminium construction means that if anything sits on the lid when the MacBook is closed (even a small object), the screen can crack. Classic culprits: keys or headphones in your bag.
Spotlight slowdown. After major macOS updates or moving lots of files, Spotlight runs for several hours indexing. Completely normal — wait it out or pause Spotlight temporarily.
Soldered SSD/RAM + Apple Silicon encryption. You cannot upgrade anything yourself on an M1 Air. The SSD is encrypted by the Secure Enclave on the M chip, so data is only accessible if the original M chip is functional. If SSD-related components on the logic board fail, we restore the board to a state where the M processor can once again access and decrypt the SSD (typically DKK 4,000–8,000). Always keep a backup as insurance.
Repairing a MacBook Air M1
We handle every repair on the MacBook Air M1:
- Battery replacement
- Screen replacement
- USB-C port
- Top case (including keyboard, battery, trackpad)
- Logic board repair (component-level)
- Data recovery on Apple Silicon (component-level logic board repair that lets the M chip decrypt the SSD again)

Should I repair or buy new?
Rule of thumb: if the repair costs less than half the MacBook’s current value, repair it. The M1 Air is still a capable machine — there’s no reason to throw it out just because the battery needs replacing.
