MacBook Air M2 (2022) – known issues and repair
Last updated:
Quick answer
The MacBook Air M2 introduced a new design (notch, MagSafe, flat chassis) and suffers from thermal throttling under sustained load due to the fanless design combined with a larger chip. Generally durable, but SSD performance on the 256 GB model is significantly lower than M1. We handle every repair.
About the MacBook Air M2
The MacBook Air M2, launched in July 2022, marked a complete redesign: notch, MagSafe 3, flat chassis and a more powerful M2 chip. The fanless architecture was retained.
Specifications:
- Chip: Apple M2 (8-core CPU, 8- or 10-core GPU)
- RAM: 8/16/24 GB unified
- SSD: 256 GB – 2 TB
- Display: 13.6” Liquid Retina, 2560×1664, notch
- Ports: 2× Thunderbolt/USB 4 + MagSafe 3 + jack
Known issues
256 GB SSD = half speed. Apple went from 2 NAND chips to 1 in the base model. Synthetic benchmarks show ~1,500 MB/s read vs. ~3,000 MB/s on the M1. Felt during large file transfers and video editing.
Thermal throttling. Sustained heavy load (e.g. 30+ minutes of 4K rendering) pushes the CPU to 100°C and throttles. Acceptable for the main target audience (web, office, light creative work) — not for video pros.
Denting. The flatter, sharper-edged chassis dents more visibly than the M1’s more rounded shape when dropped. A cosmetic issue, not a functional one.
Repair with us
We handle:
- Battery replacement, screen replacement, USB-C/MagSafe port
- Top case replacement
- Component-level logic board repair
- Data recovery on Apple Silicon: logic board repair that brings the M processor back so it can access and decrypt the SSD itself. Price: DKK 4,000–8,000.
