Older Intel MacBooks (2012–2020) – known issues, repair and the end of macOS support
Last updated:
Quick answer
Intel MacBooks from 2012–2020 still have many years of life left if the battery and any SSD are refreshed. macOS won't support them forever though — Sequoia (2024) dropped many Intel models. Repair with us is typically cheaper than a new device, as long as the MacBook still meets your needs.
Which older Intel MacBook do you have?
| Model | Year | Status in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Pro Retina 13”/15” | 2012–2015 | Sequoia not supported, runs on Big Sur/Monterey |
| MacBook Pro 13”/15” Touch Bar | 2016–2017 | Butterfly keyboard, flexgate. Sequoia not supported |
| MacBook Pro 13”/15”/16” | 2018–2019 | T2 chip, butterfly v3. Sequoia supports 2018+ |
| MacBook Air | 2018–2020 | Sequoia supports 2020 (Intel) |
| MacBook Pro 13” | 2020 (Intel) | Sequoia supported, but the last Intel version |
When does it make sense to repair?
Rules of thumb:
- Repair < 30% of the MacBook’s current value: easy yes, repair it
- Repair 30–50%: weigh how long you intend to keep using it
- Repair > 50%: consider a used M1 Air instead
Example: a 2017 MacBook Pro 13” in good condition is worth DKK 3,000–4,000 used. A battery replacement = clearly worth it. A full new top case = probably not — but individual key repair from DKK 50 per key is affordable. See current pricing at macmo.dk/reparation.
Repair with us
We repair every Intel MacBook:
- Battery replacement
- Screen replacement
- Butterfly individual key repair: from DKK 50 per key — our preferred solution
- Keyboard (full top case replacement on butterfly) — only for extensive damage
- SSD replacement (on models with socketed SSD)
- Data recovery (pre-T2 models, 2012–2017): we clone data out of failed hard drives and SSDs with specialist tools
- Data recovery (T2 models, 2018+): logic board repair that brings the T2 processor back so it can access and decrypt the SSD itself
- Component-level logic board repair
- GPU replacement (radeongate on 2011)

Extending the lifespan
- Battery replacement typically gives 4–5 years of extra use
- SSD upgrade (on models where it’s possible) to a 1 TB SSD gives a significant performance boost
- RAM upgrade (only 2012–2015 models) to 16 GB helps with multitasking
- Linux can give 5+ extra years of life when macOS drops support
- Thermal paste replacement lowers temperatures and extends the logic board’s lifespan
Frequently asked questions
Can my older Intel MacBook still run macOS?
macOS Sequoia (2024) supports the MacBook Air 2020 and MacBook Pro 2018+. Earlier models are stuck on macOS Sonoma or older. Apple typically issues security updates for 2–3 years after a model drops from the main version, so a 2017 MacBook is likely to get its last security update around 2026–2027.
Can I install Linux or Windows on an old Intel MacBook?
Yes. Linux (e.g. Ubuntu, Fedora) installs via USB. Windows can be installed via Boot Camp on 2012–2020 models. ChromeOS Flex is a great option for older machines. It gives Intel MacBooks 5+ extra years of life as a functional computer.
What does a battery replacement cost on an old Intel MacBook?
DKK 1,000–1,200 for the old Unibody (2009–2012), DKK 1,300–1,500 for the Pro Retina 13'' (2012–2015), DKK 1,500–1,700 for the Pro Retina 15'', and DKK 1,800–2,000 for 2016+ Touch Bar Pro with glued-in battery. All inclusive of labour and 2 years' warranty. See current pricing at macmo.dk/reparation.
Which older MacBook is worth buying second-hand in 2026?
Generally: better to buy an M1 Air for DKK 4,000–5,500 than an old Intel. But if you have specific needs (Boot Camp Windows, older Mac software), a 2018–2020 MacBook Pro is still usable. The 2016–2017 has the butterfly keyboard and flexgate — but our individual key repair from DKK 50 per key makes keyboard faults affordable, as long as the price is otherwise low.
