Known Mac issues by year — Pro 2015, 2016, 2017 and M1 models
Last updated:
Quick answer
Every Mac generation has its signature faults. Some are Apple's own design flaws (butterfly keyboard, flexgate, radeongate), others are simply wear and tear. We know every generation and have the specialist equipment to repair both Apple's own design defects and ordinary hardware faults.

What are the known issues on the MacBook Pro 2015?
MacBook Pro 15-inch 2015 (Retina, no Touch Bar): 1) GPU faults (especially dGPU models with AMD Radeon — Apple ran a repair program that has now expired), 2) battery degradation after 4-5 years, 3) screen staining (anti-reflective coating peeling off), 4) display flex-cable wear. The MacBook Pro 13-inch 2015 is more durable. Repair with us.
What are the known issues on the MacBook Pro 2016?
The worst generation. 1) Butterfly keyboard v1 — dead and double-typing keys (massive complaints, Apple ran a repair program). 2) Flexgate — broken display flex cable causing the 'stage light' effect or a fully black screen when the lid is opened wide. 3) Faulty SSD controller (rarer). A used purchase can still be fine at the right price — we repair butterfly keyboards at the individual key level (from DKK 50 per key), so keyboard faults are very affordable.
What are the known issues on the MacBook Pro 2017?
Almost the same problems as 2016: butterfly keyboard v2 (only marginally better, still defect-prone) and flexgate on the 13-inch models. Plus: GPU thermal throttling under heavy load. Apple ran repair programs for both the keyboard and flexgate, which have now expired for most. We can still repair them.
What are the known issues on the MacBook Air M1?
Generally one of Apple's most durable models. Few faults: 1) battery degradation after 4-5 years (expected), 2) USB-C port wear (only 2 ports), 3) the occasional 'cracked screen' from pressure on the lid, 4) Spotlight (mds_stores) using high CPU after large macOS updates. If SSD-related components on the logic board fail, we restore the board to a state where the M-processor can again access and decrypt the SSD (DKK 4,000-8,000).
What are the known issues on the MacBook Pro M1?
Also very durable. Few faults: 1) battery degradation after 4-5 years, 2) occasional SSD-related faults (we perform component-level logic board repair that lets the M-chip's Secure Enclave decrypt the SSD again, so data becomes accessible — DKK 4,000-8,000), 3) random 'pink screen' (resolved with macOS updates), 4) MagSafe 3 cable fraying at the connector on 14-inch/16-inch models. Repair with us is available for all of these.
