Mac audio issues — no sound, crackling, low volume, faulty microphone

Quick answer
Audio problems on a Mac are rarely software (typically a quick fix in Sound settings). If the sound is distorted or the speakers crackle, the speakers are physically damaged — usually after liquid damage or a drop. We can replace speakers on every MacBook model.

Why is there no sound?
Check in this order: 1) volume level (press F11 up several times), 2) sound output in the menu bar — is the right device selected? 3) System Settings → Sound → Output — are the Mac speakers selected? 4) Test whether headphones work — if yes, it's the speakers. 5) If nothing works, try an NVRAM reset (Intel).
Why are the speakers crackling?
Crackling sound is physical damage to the speaker membranes — typically after liquid damage or sustained heavy bass over time. Speakers can't be repaired, only replaced. See current speaker replacement pricing at macmo.dk/reparation.
Why is the volume low?
1) Check volume and 'Output Volume' in System Settings → Sound. 2) Check the balance (push it back to center). 3) If volume is at max but the sound is still low, it could be damaged speakers or an audio-balance fault. Test with headphones to separate speaker hardware from software.
Why doesn't the microphone work?
1) Check microphone permissions: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone — does the app you're using have access? 2) Test the mic in QuickTime Player → New Audio Recording. 3) Check input levels in System Settings → Sound → Input. 4) If nothing works, the microphone may be faulty — typically due to liquid damage. Why doesn't FaceTime audio work?
1) Test mic and audio outside FaceTime (QuickTime). 2) If that works, but FaceTime doesn't: sign out of FaceTime and back in. 3) Delete FaceTime preferences (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.facetime.plist). 4) Restart. 5) If the problem is hardware (no audio anywhere), fix the microphone first via us.
